Shooting Leaves 14-Year-Old Dead, Sends SWAT Team To Larimer
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- An overnight shooting claimed the life of a 14-year-old, left a 19-year-old critically injured and sent the SWAT Team to Pittsburgh's Larimer section overnight.
According to Pittsburgh police, the shooting happened around 11:45 p.m. behind an apartment building in the 6500-block of Meadow Street near Llewellyn Street.
The 14-year-old victim, identified by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office as Stephon Smith of Larimer, was found in a back alley with several gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police say.
An autopsy has been scheduled for later today.
The other victim, a 19-year-old man, was taken to UPMC Presbyterian Hospital in critical condition. He underwent surgery early this morning. Officials say he suffered gunshot wounds to the torso and back.
The SWAT Team was called in to search the apartment building after police say they learned that the suspect reportedly ran into the first floor.
"We understand that a suspect may have run through one of the apartments in that apartment building," said Cmdr. Thomas Stangrecki, of the Pittsburgh Police Department.
The SWAT Team searched the building and also a nearby abandoned church, coming up empty handed. But Pittsburgh police said this morning that there was interest in a particular apartment.
"We secured an apartment," said Cmdr. Stangrecki. "We're getting a search warrant to see if there's any evidence located in the apartment."
During the search this morning, the building and a few other homes were evacuated. One of the neighbors woke up to several gun shots and then was told by police to get out of his home.
"It's sad," said Stacy Berry, a neighbor. "There's too much black violence and all the crimes going on today."
Pittsburgh police homicide detectives continue to investigate. So far, investigators say no motive has been determined and no arrests have been made.
"If someone left the scene that may know something about the shooting, we're asking for them to come forward," Cmdr. Stangrecki added.
