Senator's Bill Could Save You Money On Vehicle Inspections

EAST LIBERTY (KDKA) -- A state senator is hoping his bill will update the vehicle inspection law, saving some people money.

Sen. Elder Vogel says he's hopeful the bill will pass eventually, despite hitting roadblocks.

"Sometimes you introduce the bill two or three times before you get it to go past," Vogel said.

But Vogel and his co-sponsors will try again in January – and if they succeed, it could mean more money in your pocket.

"It costs $30 to $40 to do an emissions testing and another $40 for an inspection, unless you need some work done, so it would save everyone $70 to $80 a year probably," he said.

The legislation doesn't eliminate state vehicle inspections, which AAA says often find brake and tire problems. But the bill will exempt cars under two years old.

"That's because there's a very slight failure rate for cars that are within two years old and those cars are under warranty," Vogel said.

And in areas that require emissions testing, cars will be exempt for the first five years. It's a point that has some service providers upset.

"They don't want to lose the dollars at the end of the day from doing the emissions testing," said Vogel.

The Automotive Service Providers Association objects to the bill in part because they're trying to protect their money, but also say inspections should be based on the usage of a car, not how old it is. They plan to be back in Harrisburg after the first of the year to fight the bill once it's reintroduced.
