Robinson Township officer charged in alleged road rage incident

A Robinson Township police officer is facing charges in connection with a road rage attack.

Court paperwork shows Steve Pies, who was off-duty at the time, was charged with a felony count of aggravated assault and a misdemeanor count of simple assault.

Pies is accused of punching a prominent businessman in the face and breaking his ribs after Pies said the victim cut him off.

According to the criminal complaint, Pies followed Al Cannella in his personal vehicle after Cannella failed to yield to him in traffic. Investigators said Pies followed Cannella about 2 miles on Forest Grove Road to Cannella's business, Al's Texaco.

Pies and Cannella both got out of their vehicles and Pies allegedly confronted Cannella in the parking lot, swearing at him. Pies then allegedly punched Cannella in the face, causing him to fall and lose consciousness. Police say Pies then left the scene.

On July 7, Cannella sought medical treatment and was diagnosed with fractured ribs, prompting him to file a report with Robinson Township police. The investigation was turned over to Allegheny County police. They interviewed witnesses and got surveillance video.

Pies, 50, is out on bond pending his preliminary hearing. The township solicitor confirmed Pies is still on paid leave.

A loudermill hearing is scheduled for next week, where Pies can respond to the charges. The township will then make a decision on how to discipline him.

Pies' attorney, Blaine Jones, said in a statement: "Officer Pies has proudly served as a police officer in our community for over 20 years.

"We are currently gathering evidence and taking statements of our witnesses in order to prepare for the preliminary hearing."

Thomas Wagner, who knows the victim, said, "As for the police officer, I'm not sure there is any excuse."
