Bucs To Announce Hurdle As Manager
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The Pittsburgh Pirates' search for a new manager is reportedly over.
According to a Sports Illustrated report, the Pirates have hired Clint Hurdle and will hold a press conference Monday at 11 a.m.
During his tenure as manager of the Colorado Rockies from 2002-09, Hurdle amassed a record of 534-625.
The lone winning season he enjoyed in Colorado, led to a World Series appearance in 2007. The Rockies went on a tear down the stretch and swept their way into the World Series.
They met the Boston Red Sox and were quickly eliminated in a four-game sweep.
For the 2010 season, Hurdle served as the hitting coach for the Texas Rangers.
The Rangers led the majors in hitting and were fifth overall in runs scored. Their offense was one reason the Rangers advanced to the World Series before losing in five games to the San Francisco Giants.
After the Pirates interviewed eight managerial candidates, it came down to Hurdle and Jeff Bannister.
Bannister has been a with the Pirates for 25 years and has held several different positions.
During the 2010 season, he was the team's bench coach. He also served as the team's minor league field coordinator for eight years.
John Russell was fired after his third season with the Pirates, who finished the 2010 season with a 57-105 record.
Pittsburgh was 17-64 away from PNC Park, which equaled the worst road record in a 162-game schedule set by the New York Mets in 1963.
