Suspect In Cook Forest Area Standoff Surrenders After More Than 24 Hours

COOKSBURG (KDKA) -- After more than 24 hours, a reportedly armed man who barricaded himself in a Cook Forest area store surrendered to state police late Sunday morning.

According to ExploreClarion.com, the initial report of an incident along Route 36 came in just before 10 a.m. Saturday. Police later closed a stretch between River Road and Route 899. The road was closed and the standoff continued for more than 24 hours.

Shortly after 11:30 a.m. Sunday, ExploreClarion.com reported that the suspect had surrendered to state police. State police told ExploreClarion.com that the suspect had "some minor injuries," but no other injuries were reported.

DCNR Chief Ranger John McAvoy told exploreClarion.com that an armed man barricaded himself inside the business and that police were in contact with him early on but "communication broke down."

Police say the situation involved the MacBeth's Cabins, near the intersection of Route 36 and River Road.

People nearby reported hearing gunfire around 7:30 p.m.

Residents in the area were reportedly told to stay inside their homes, but authorities said there was no immediate danger to the public.
