Pittsburgh's Fourth of July celebration resumes following postponement for severe weather

The city of Pittsburgh has resumed Fourth of July festivities as of Saturday evening following severe weather that hit the region.

Via a social media update, officials said gates will reopen at Point State Park and the North Shore as of 8:15 p.m. The fireworks display is scheduled for 10 p.m.

"Safety is our top priority and schedules may change if weather conditions worsen," the post read.

Officials temporarily suspended the celebrations just before 5 p.m. due to the threat of inclement weather, including lightning that was detected within 8 miles of the event site.

A large crowd had gathered at the Wyndham Grand Pittsburgh Downtown hotel, one of the available shelter sites, to wait out the weather and resume the celebration.
