Pittsburgh Connections Give Hall Of Fame Inductions Local Feel

CANTON, Ohio (KDKA) -- With four of the six inductees having local connections, the enshrinement ceremony Saturday night at the Pro Football Hall of Fame had a noticeable Pittsburgh presence.

This year, two former Pittsburgh Steelers – Jack Butler and Dermontti Dawson, and two former Pitt Panthers – Curtis Martin and Chris Doleman, were inducted and many Pittsburgh football fans made the trip to Canton to watch the ceremony.

This year at the Pro Football Hall of Fame, it wasn't just Steelers Nation, Pitt fans made the trip as well.

"I'm a Pitt graduate from York, Pennsylvania," said Jean Hall, a Pitt fan. "Chris Doleman's from York; I went to Pitt at the same time as Chris Doleman."

Martin, an Aliquippa native, was the other former Panther to go in. His aunt made the trip.

"I'm so proud," said Theresa Martin, wearing one of her nephew's jerseys. "Who would have ever thought. And it just, seeing him get that award - it's just a bonus."

It was a family celebration for the Dawson clan as well. Dermontti's cousin made the trip from Lexington, Ky.

"Too excited, really elated," said Butch Dawson. "I'm beside myself. Happy for my cousin. We waited a long time for this."

And maybe if we wait one more year, we'll see another Steeler make it to the hallowed halls of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

"Next year, right here – Bettis," said one fan of Steelers great Jerome Bettis.
