Pirates Sign Pitcher Kevin Correia To 2-Year Deal

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The Pirates went into the MLB Winter Meetings with the goal of adding pitchers to their starting rotation and they're accomplishing their goal.

The Pirates have reportedly signed RHP Kevin Correia to a two-year deal worth $8 million. On Monday, they inked LHP Scott Olsen to a one-year deal pending a physical.

Correia, 30, was 10-10 with a 5.40 ERA in 26 starts last season with the San Diego Padres. In 2009, he won 11 games and posted a 3.91 ERA in 33 starts.

The team now looks to have four spots of their rotation filled with Correia, James McDonald, Paul Maholm and Ross Ohlendorf.

The battle for the fifth spot will be between Olsen, Brad Lincoln, Charlie Morton and anyone else that they might sign.

Look for General Manager Neal Huntington to next address shortstop, first base, right field and bullpen depth.

This is the first multi-year deal that the Pirates have given a free agent pitcher since Cam Bonifay signed Pete Schourek to a two-year deal in 1998.
