Overbrook Residents Dealing With 2nd Water Main Break

OVERBROOK (KDKA) - Overbrook residents are dealing with a second water main break in less than 24 hours.

Around 2 a.m., an eight-inch main ruptured along Walton Avenue, which sent debris flying and water gushing into the air.

"My wife thought she heard thunder and lightning, she thought," George Gehringer said.

Water flooded the home directly behind the break. The homeowner said that flying rocks hit his roof and his car parked behind the house.

Neighbors said they've had breaks over the last couple years, but nothing like this.

"They're just deteriorated so bad," Gehringer said. "We have had problems here. I know they've fixed this two, if not three times."

On Monday, another water main break happened less than a mile away on Homehurst Avenue. That water main break caused a sinkhole to open, which swallowed a truck and trailer.

Today, crews were back at the scene after being delayed in making repairs overnight due to storms.

The concrete main that broke in that location was being replaced and water was slowly being restored to roughly 50 customers.

The break sent water rushing down a hill. At least one home at the bottom of the hill has suffered significant damage.

"The upstairs, the back where the kitchen is, water came in just because it was rushing through the middle, but the basement...as high as the washer and dryer," Brandon McDonald said.

"We had approximately 10 customers that sustained damage. Pennsylvania American Water will work with those customers to restore any damage that was a result of the water main break," Penn American Water's Gary Lobaugh said.
