Over height truck hits Fort Pitt Tunnel, inbound lanes reopen after hour-long closure

The Fort Pitt Tunnel has fully reopened after nearly an hour of being closed due to an over-height truck hitting the top of the tunnel.

PennDOT told KDKA-TV that an over-height truck was traveling through the tunnel, but ended up hitting something on the top of the tunnel right before exiting.

The hit only caused minor damage, giving them the opportunity to quickly inspect the tunnel and get it reopened.

It is still not known if there were any injuries as a result.

Original story follows below.

Thursday morning's traffic rush might get a little more hectic due to a closure of the Fort Pitt Tunnel.

According to PennDOT, an over-height truck hit the top of the tunnel on the inbound side of the tunnel.

For a brief period of time, both sides of the tunnel were closed, but as of about 7:30 a.m., the outbound lanes are open, and the inbound lanes have reopened to traffic.

PennDOT is urging drivers to find alternate routes.

Emergency personnel are on the scene, and it's unclear if anyone was hurt as a result.

We have a crew headed to the scene and will bring you the latest on air and online.
