No-Kill Shelter Takes In Animals From Closed Fayette Co. SPCA

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The state Thursday revoked the license of the Fayette County SPCA in North Union Township.

In explaining its decision to at least temporarily close and quarantine the shelter, the state said the facility failed to provide sanitary and humane conditions.

Candy Nelson, who runs the no-kill shelter called Animal Friends of Westmoreland [County], in Youngwood, visited the troubled SPCA shelter recently, and was able to rescue about a dozen sick, or aged animals.

They were brought to the Youngwood facility and several have already been adopted out, or are temporarily in foster homes.

Among the dogs removed, the SPCA and still in the Youngwood shelter was a blind Chihuahua named Lola along with a mixed Corgi Beagle, named Ben.

The two dogs are closely bonded, according to Nelson, they were found in an abandoned home and brought to the Fayette County location. Nelson said the pair would have to be adopted out together.

Nelson said, "the two dogs, like many of the others, were infested with fleas when they were brought here to Youngwood, and they would have both likely have been euthanized if they remained in North Union Township, because that shelter is always in need of space, and medical care for the two dogs would be too expensive, and dogs like Lola and Ben are not easily adopted."
