Medical Frontiers: Skin Cancer

PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) -- Dr. Gerald Pifer and KDKA Radio's Robert Mangino hosted this week's Skin Cancer edition of Medical Frontiers.

Howard Edington who is chair of the Department of Surgery and Director of West Penn Allegheny Cutaneous Oncology Center talked about the causes of skin cancer and ways individuals can prevent it.

"Sunscreen is the best way to prevent skin cancer and if one develops a new mole or if an existing mole changes color, size, or shape then call the doctor," Edington said.

If melanoma is found, it will need to be removed with surgery and doctors must check to see if it has spread to the lymph nodes.

He also says everyone should be checked for skin cancer by a dermatologist once or twice a year.

Listen to Medical Frontiers every Monday from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on NewsRadio 1020 KDKA.
