PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A restaurant in Pittsburgh's Squirrel Hill South neighborhood was hit with a consumer alert after an inspector found rodent droppings and dead cockroaches.

The Allegheny County Health Department issued the consumer alert for Jian's Kitchen on Forbes Avenue after an inspection on Thursday.

According to the inspection report, there were "fresh" rodent droppings throughout the restaurant, including beneath shelves, on a tray holding drinking glasses, under the dishwasher and inside the interior cabinet of the deep fryer.

In a cabinet next to the prep cooler on the cookline, the inspector reported finding two dead roaches, approximately 20 cockroach egg casings "and too many to count cockroach droppings."

The health department said the restaurant was also holding some food at temperatures that were too high and a slicer was "observed soiled with dried food debris."

Those violations are all considered high-risk, which, according to the health department, means they may lead directly to food-borne illness or injury.

The inspector also reported "foul-smelling, yellow grease and water" and "dark-black grease" around grease traps in the facility.

The consumer alert was still posted as of Monday afternoon, according to the health department's website. A yellow consumer alert placard signifies that a food facility is out of compliance with minimum food safety standards and the conditions may pose a risk to public health.
