Both drivers were taken to local hospitals. A 77-year-old man who was in a minivan died at the hospital. He was later identified as Raymond Anderson.

The other man involved, a 35-year-old driving a BMW, is in stable condition.

They were the sole occupants of each vehicle, police said.

Homicide detectives and crash reconstructionists are investigating at the scene.

Investigators say the BMW was traveling south on Route 8 when a witness reported the 35-year-old driving erratically. Police say he then crossed the center line and struck the minivan driven by the 77-year-old at a high rate of speed.

Police say investigators will consult with the DA's office to see if any charges are warranted.

PennDOT has closed Route 8 between Wildwood Road and Mount Royal Boulevard while police investigate and clear the scene.

Commuters are being directed around the closure.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to contact the Allegheny County Police Tip Line at 1-833-ALL-TIPS.
