Gun Found Inside Clayton Academy Student's Backpack

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Police are investigating after a loaded gun was found inside a 17-year-old student's backpack.

This happened at Clayton Academy on Pittsburgh's North Side. Students in grades 6-12 attend school there.

The school is not run by Pittsburgh Public Schools. It is contracted out to community education partners.

The school is for children with behavioral issues. The kids are supposed to turn in their backpacks at the beginning of the school day.

The backpacks are returned at the end of the day.

A teacher noticed the student's backpack was heavy, looked inside and found the .38 caliber handgun.

No one was hurt.

The student was taken to the Shuman Juvenile Detention Center and faces felony charges for having a gun on school property, altering the serial number and having an unlicensed firearm.
