Gas Station Employee Injured During Attempted Robbery

SOUTH STRABANE TOWNSHIP (KDKA) – A gas station employee was injured while fighting back during an attempted robbery in Washington County Wednesday night.

According to police, the incident took place at the BP gas station on Murtland Avenue in South Strabane Township around 9:21 p.m.

"We definitely encourage all these gas stations and quick marts that are close to interstates or anywhere to keep video surveillance up," said Detective Mike Schidlmeier, of South Strabane Police.

The clerk was working in the rear of the store when he spotted a man running through the parking lot.

The employee told police that the suspect entered the store, held a knife toward him and demanded money. The suspect then began to fight with the employee. However, the employee was able to get the suspect to leave the store.

"The actor turns around, displays a knife towards him and tells him that 'he's here for the money,'" said Detective Schidlmeier.

Surveillance images show the would-be robber grabbing the clerk. They ended up wrestling on the floor.

"The employee was actually able to get him out of the store," Detective Schidlmeier said.

But the fight wasn't over yet.

"The fight ensued out in the parking lot," added Detective Schidlmeier.

The suspect took off, and the clerk was left with a badly slashed hand.

Police described the suspect as a white male standing 5-feet-10-inches to 6-feet tall with a medium build. He was wearing a green, hooded-jacket with distinctive pockets on the left arm, dark pants and white and black shoes.

He also had red coloring on his face and red gloves.

"He put on his face to disguise himself," Detective Schidlmeier said. "That same type of red was on the gloves that he wore."

Anyone with information is asked to call South Strabane Township Police at (724)-225-8111.
