Former Pirate Kent Tekulve, On Hurdle's Hiring
FSN Analyst and Former Pittsburgh Pirates Pitcher Kent Tekulve joined the Fan Morning Show to discuss the signing of Clint Hurdle as the next Pirates manager. Tekulve knew Hurdle for a long time and spent a lot of time with him during Hurdle's stint as Mets minor league manager.
Tekulve likes two comments by Hurdle, the first is that the team needs to win to get fans on back on their side, and the second comment Tekulve likes from the Hurdle press conference is, it's going to be about the player and players make managers, managers don't make players.
Tekulve thinks it won't be about how good Hurdle will coach, it will be the kind of players they put on the field. Tekulve thinks the key to the Pirates success is to have the current pitchers to perform at an average or better level compared to an average MLB player, because pitching talent on the open market is so slim.
Tekulve told Jim Colony about what the players are going through and what they are thinking as the team makes a managerial change.
