Female Candidate Challenges Congressman Mike Kelly

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Her name is Missa Eaton and she is the only woman in this region running for Congress.

"I have spent the last 17 years in higher education, the last eight of which have been at Penn State Shenango, and I've seen a lot of my students struggle finding a job afterwards," she said.

Democrat Eaton of Sharon is taking on Republican Congressman Mike Kelly of Butler.

In the sprawling new third congressional district that stretches from Erie south into Crawford, Mercer, Lawrence, Armstrong, Clarion and Butler counties, including Cranberry, a much more Pittsburgh regional district than the old one.

"It's fortunate for me that I live in Mercer County which is right in the middle of the seven counties," she said.

The offspring of a bus driver, secretary, painters and farmers, Eaton criticizes Kelly, who owns a successful car dealership, for favoring the wealthy and being out-of-touch.

"Mr. Kelly's never had to worry where his next meal was coming from and he's never had to worry whether his next pay check would be his last," she said. "And I think the people of the third district deserve to have someone representing them who's been where they are."

And she says whether it's job creation or health care, her focus is middle class.

"Every day that I am in office I will be doing everything to make sure that their lives are better and that each and every one of us out here can live the American Dream, I think that that's really important and not just people who already have resources."
