Cliff Floyd: Cutch's Injury May Be Major Issue, Power Not Enough For Pedro
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) – MLB Network analyst and former major leaguer Cliff Floyd joined Chris Mack, Josh Miller, and Jim Colony on "The Fan Morning Show" Friday to talk about the Pirates.
Currently, the Pirates are 18-22 this season as they head into a holiday weekend series against the Mets.
Today, Floyd discussed the struggles of two of the Pirates' key players - Andrew McCutchen and Pedro Alvarez.
When it comes to McCutchen, Floyd thinks that his issues may not go away, and that the Pirates will have trouble accomplishing their goals if that's the case.
"If you don't get what you've seen the last couple seasons from him, this could be a team that struggles, because everybody sort of leans on him and he's the star," Floyd said. "He's beat up. That knee of his, that front leg, it's hampering him from being the guy we've seen in the past, and I don't know if it's going to be the season we've seen throughout his career this year, but I think that if you don't have him being an All-Star, being the stud that we've seen in the past, it might be a struggle this year to get back to that point where they were last year."
As for Pedro Alvarez, Floyd said that he'd like to see Alvarez improve as a hitter before he improves as a slugger.
"I think with Pedro, it's him figuring out a way to be more consistent with just being a good hitter, learning how to be a better hitter in certain situations where it's not just you're looking for Pedro to hit the three-run homer," Floyd said. "He has such a good presence when he's in the box, and I would like to see him take that next step and become a better hitter, and then letting the power be there as well. You want to see him make that jump to be a better hitter before he's just a power guy."
