Chickenpox case reported at Monessen Elementary Center
A confirmed case of chickenpox has been reported within the Monessen Elementary Center.
In a letter to the school community, Monessen Director of Special Education and Student Services Dr. Christy DeCarlo said the district is working closely with the school nurse and is following recommended health guidelines to monitor the situation.
The district is encouraging families to monitor their children for any signs of illness.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, chickenpox, which is very contagious, often begins with symptoms like fever, fatigue, and loss of appetite, followed by an itchy rash.
The rash often starts with small red spots and progresses to blisters that become scabbed over, the CDC says. Symptoms of chickenpox typically appear between 10 and 21 days after being exposed to the virus.
"If your child develops symptoms consistent with chickenpox, please keep them home and contact your healthcare provider for guidance," the letter said.
The letter said that it's understandin that some families might prefer to keep children home from school out of an abundance of caution and that any excuses related to the matter will be excused.
"Our custodial team will continue to maintain enhances cleaning procedures, and we will remain in communication with local health officials as needed," the letter said.
Anyone with concerns or questions is asked to contact the district's main office or the school nurse.
