Cash Stolen During Downtown Jewelry Store Robbery

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Police are looking for two suspects after a downtown jewelry store was robbed.

It happened at Jewelry Deposit Inc. on Smithfield Street before 8 p.m. Monday.

The sign out front reads: "Cash for Gold," but Monday night, it was more like cash at gunpoint.

Two men entered the store with their faces covered, just before closing and demanded cash.

"As soon as they walked in, they covered their faces with paper towels," the store's owner said. "Then I felt something was not right and one was approaching me really fast."

The owner says both men were wearing jackets -- one blue, one red -- and within seconds, he realized one had a gun.

"The one who approached me, he showed me the gun, said don't move, said don't look outside, and act normal," he said.

The owner says the two men then forced him down on the floor and put zip ties around his wrists -- then put him inside a closet. They didn't take any jewelry during the robbery, but did get away with thousands in cash.

"They took the money," the owner said. "Cash. They knew where the money was. They knew everything. They probably watched me."

When the owner finally did break free, he ran out to Smithfield Street, looked toward the bridge and spotted a dark-colored vehicle crossing the bridge, heading toward Station Square.

"It happens, if it's meant to be, it's meant to be," the owner said. "If it's your destiny, change it."

The owner also said the surveillance cameras in the store weren't operating at the time, so police don't have a lot to go on.
