Boy, 16, Arrested In Fatal East Busway Shooting

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting along the East Busway last week.

According to police, the body of 21-year-old Omar Islam was found lying in an East Busway shelter at the North Homewood stop on Oct. 8.

Police said he'd been robbed and shot to death.

Police reviewed surveillance video and saw three-men, one acting as a lookout, the other two were pushing Omar, robbing him – and opening fire.

KDKA's Mary Robb Jackson reports:

During their investigation, police determined 16-year-old Jordan Bey to be a suspect in the case.

During an interview with police, Bey detailed the events that led to the shooting.

KDKA's Mary Robb Jackson reports:

Bey said he was visiting 20-year-old Desmond Young when another man referred to as "Blue" arrived. "Blue" was upset about a fight with his girlfriend, which resulted in him being kicked out of the house.

"Blue" then said they needed to rob someone so he could get money to stay somewhere. The three got on Facebook and when attempts to trick people failed, they decided to go to a nearby ATM and wait for someone to use it.

When no one showed up at the ATM, they moved on to the East Busway stop, where they saw Omar alone using his phone.

"Blue" kept watch while Bey and Young approached Islam. As they got close to Islam, Bey pulled out a gun and Young asked for him to hand over the phone saying, "I need you to give me the phone."

Young and Islam began to fight over the phone and a black duffle bag. At that time, Bey shot Islam once in the leg. Islam then threw the phone into the street. Bey went to pick up the phone, but noticed Islam walking toward him.

KDKA's Brenda Waters reports:

Bey told police that he "must have blacked out because he just started shooting the victim."

Bey is now facing a list of charges including, criminal homicide, robbery, conspiracy and firearms violations.

Police are asking for the public's help to locate Young at this time. Young is described as an African-American male standing 5-feet-5-inches tall and weighing about 160 pounds.
