Benkovitz Seafoods Closes

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Pittsburgh's oldest seafood market, Benkovitz Seafoods, has closed its doors.

After nearly 100 years in business, the Strip District fish market closed up shop over the weekend, and workers were seen taking things out of the building on Tuesday.

Benkovitz supplied restaurants and diners with a variety of fish and other seafood.

Owners of other restaurants throughout the area stopped by the store's rummage sale.

The owner says the economy over the last few years made it hard to survive.

"I knew they weren't doing that good, but it was still a shock to see it actually closed," said Henry Dewey, a former Benkovitz chef. "It was really an institution in Pittsburgh. It's always sad to see something like that go."

Benkovitz Seafoods opened in 1916.

A leasing agent told told our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the 4,000-square-foot space is now listed as for rent.
