Pittsburgh-area police officer faces charges after alleged domestic incident leads to standoff
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — A man has surrendered following an hours-long standoff with law enforcement on Friday in Shaler Township.
Police identified the man as James Williams, who officials said is a sergeant with the Munhall Borough Police Department.
Friday's standoff began at around 8 a.m. on Oakmoore Drive in Shaler when someone called 911 about a domestic disturbance.
"The call there was regarding yelling from the house and they were concerned about the safety of the female occupant," Shaler Police Chief Sean Frank said.
The call led to a four-hour standoff. A woman, several children and one person described as an inlaw managed to escape the home before police arrived. The person barricaded inside was later identified as Williams.
The dangerous drama played out close to Burchfield Primary School, which was put on lockdown out of an abundance of caution, police said.
Law enforcement used flashbang grenades to try to get the man out, as well as FBI negotiators to try to make contact with him, to no avail.
After four hours, Williams surrendered.
"The subject after multiple attempts to contact him from the SWAT team and negotiators, he did walk out of the house and surrender to the officers peacefully," Frank said.
No one was hurt in the standoff, officials said. Williams, who also served in the military and at one point was an Allegheny County sheriff's deputy, was taken into custody. He faces multiple counts, including domestic assault charges.
