Annual Steelers 5K To Raise Money For Rooney Scholarship Fund
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Some former Pittsburgh Steelers will come together this weekend for a big event - the annual Steelers 5K race at Heinz Field.
It's an exciting event that combines fun, fitness, and giving back and will be held this Saturday, Aug. 25.
One of the chairs of this year's event is former wide receiver Louis Lipps.
He started his eight seasons with the Steelers back in 1984.
"They pretty much made me who I am and I'm very grateful for that, I always look back on that even today after these years. I'm still requested to do things and that's just part of the Steelers' way," Lipps said.
Other former players will join Lipps for the race that raises money for the Art Rooney Scholarship Fund. It was created in memory of the late founder of the Steelers, who died in August of 1988.
Each year, a $12,000 award is handed out to a graduating senior from the high schools on the North Side, where Rooney lived most of this life.
"Everybody knows how The Chief was with the neighborhood and all his giving and the way that he responded to them as well as they responded to the Steelers," Lipps said.
Over the years, more than 70 local students have received scholarship money.
Lipps said Rooney would be pleased to know how many students have been helped.
"It brings back memories of The Chief and you know, you go back in the archives and you look at all the pictures of The Chief, he is always around people, he's always around kids, he is always giving, he is always doing something for that person, for this person," Lipps said.
The race kicks off from Heinz Field, Saturday at 9 a.m.
