A Look Back To 1992, The Last Time The Pirates Had A Winning Season
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- If you were like many Pirates fans last night, after the Bucs won their 81st game of the season, you got on social media. Maybe you posted a tweet or texted a friend.
But what if none of that existed?
No social media, no smartphones, no such thing as a text message. That was the case the last time the Pirates had a winning season. And that's not all.
The year 1992 may not seem that long ago to some of you, but maybe this will change your mind.
In 1992, the Pirates played at Three Rivers Stadium along with the Steelers, the Penguins played at Civic Arena, Pitt football played at Pitt Stadium and Pitt basketball played at Fitzgerald Field House.
PNC Park, Heinz Field, CONSOL Energy Center and Petersen Events Center didn't exist.
Nor did the Miami Marlins, who have won two World Series and changed their name in the time it took the Pirates to have two winning seasons.
For that matter, the Arizona Diamondbacks and Tampa Bay Rays didn't exist, the Washington Nationals were the Montreal Expos, and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim were the California Angels.
When you watched sports, you better have paid attention. There were no clocks, scores, pitch counts or graphics of any kind, until you went to commercials.
The President of the United States in 1992 was George Bush, though he would lose the election that year to Bill Clinton.
By the way, in 1992 the Arsenio Hall Show was the main late-night competition to the Tonight Show, which that year said goodbye to Johnny Carson, and hello to Jay Leno.
And if you missed an episode, there was no DVR. You had to record it on a VCR. Also, there was no on-demand or even DVDs. You were stuck with a VHS tape.
There was no public Internet. And definitely no Twitter, Facebook, online banking, online shopping, and checking the score.
Terms like texting, email, ringtone, Wi-Fi, and MP3 didn't exist. And the thought of a camera on a phone was as crazy as your car giving you directions.
The top movie of the year was "Unforgiven."
And the top song, in September of 1992 was, appropriately enough "End of the Road" by Boyz II Men.
