1 Injured In 3-Vehicle Accident On Route 8

MARION TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) -- One person has been hospitalized following a crash this morning involving a tractor trailer, log truck and a dump truck on Route 8 in Butler County.

The crash shut down about a quarter mile of Route 8 in the area of Station Road in Harrisville, Marion Township. Crews closed the road around 8:30 a.m. and the closure was still in place at 4 p.m., nearly 8 hours later.

State police say it happened when the driver of a semi-truck didn't see a woman in a car trying to make a turn.

"Basically, it appears upon investigation that a vehicle was turning left into a side road," said Trooper First Class David Titley, of the Pennsylvania State Police. "The truck tractor failed to see that she was turning left, created a breaking action, which caused him to jackknife and then was impacted by the northbound log truck, which caused the major damage in this crash."

The tractor trailer was empty, but the dump truck was carrying slag.

The dump truck and the log truck did not lose their loads; however, the Butler County Hazmat team was called in to clean up some diesel fuel that spilled.

The driver was the car was not injured. Officials say she witnessed the crash through her rearview mirror.

The driver of the tractor trailer, who is from Johnstown, was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio.

He underwent surgery this afternoon for bleeding in the brain.

Police are still investigating, but say the truck driver appears to be at fault. They say speed was not a factor in the crash.

There's no word on his condition or identity, but he was unconscious when he was taken from the scene.

The drivers of all the other vehicles involved are from the local area.
