The impeachment trial of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas got underway Wednesday afternoon and is over. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer quickly moved to end the trial by calling for separate votes on the two articles of impeachment.

Republicans have said that formalizing the inquiry would give them leverage in court as they demand documents and witness testimony.
Senators voted to acquit Paxton on all articles, which means the suspended attorney general will be returned to office.
House Speaker Kevin McCarthy said Tuesday that he is directing House committees to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Biden, escalating GOP lawmakers' investigations into the president and his family's foreign business dealings.
Ken Paxton will be immediately suspended pending a Senate trial.
The opinions were released a day after the Republican-majority state Senate voted unanimously to put the trial on hold.
The trial was supposed to take place in the Pennsylvania State Senate.

Krasner says the state Senate can't go forward with a trial to remove him from office because the legislative session when the articles of impeachment were passed ended last week.
The House voted to impeach the Philadelphia District Attorney, but now the Senate must vote on 2 resolutions to move the process along.
The three are Republican Reps. Craig Williams and Tim Bonner and Rep. Jared Solomon, a Democrat of Philadelphia.
