When You're Up Against A Wall Gardening
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - It's amazing how much you can grow against a wall. In small courtyards, or even on the side of a garage, you can plant a lot in a vertical garden. And recently, wall plantings have advanced past hanging baskets and succulent wreaths to flat fabric planters.
'Woolly Pockets' and 'Florafelt' are just two brands you may find, and you anchor these flat fabric planting pockets with masonry bolts or wood screws depending on whether you're attaching them to a stone wall or a wooden shed. You add a lightweight planting mix, and the fabric wicks in water and seems to support plants well throughout the summer. On a recent garden tour I was surprised but I saw everything from annuals to herbs to cherry tomatoes growing in rows of these pockets.
So, if you have a small yard, a big garage, or just a boring blank fence you'd like to brighten up, consider fabric pockets that let you plant right up the wall.
