Weekend Box Office Report: Insidious Chapter 2 Scares Away The Competition

By Bill Wine

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- It was a record-setting weekend at movie theaters.

A horror sequel that opened on Friday the 13th took the weekend box office crown at multiplexes.

Insidious: Chapter 2, the followup to the 2011 horror hit, earned an estimated $41-million for an easy first-place finish on its debut weekend, far surpassing the performance of the original and even setting the record on Friday the 13th for the biggest September opening day in movie history.

The runner-up was the weekend's other new mainstream release, The Family, the crime comedy with Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer.

It took in just over $14-million in its debut.

And third place went to last weekend's leader, the sci-fi sequel, Riddick, with Vin Diesel.

It earned another $7-million.

None of the other holdovers earned as much as $6-million, but largely because of Insidious: Chapter 2 industry-wide totals were well above those of last year and quite high for September.
