Weekend Box Office: No Surprise, 'Harry Potter' Is On Top

(CBS) - In a totally unsurprising development, the latest Harry Potter movie ran away with the box office crown.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1, the Boy Wizard's next-to-last big-screen adventure -- to be followed by Part 2 next July -- earned a mere $125-million in its debut weekend, according to studio estimates.  It was the top opening of any entry in the Harry Potter franchise.

Holdovers Megamind, Unstoppable, and Due Date held down spots two through four with $16-, $13-, and $9-million, respectively.

The weekend's only other new mainstream release, The Next Three Days, the prison-escape thriller with Russell Crowe, finished fifth with just under $7-million.

But the penultimate Harry Potter flick owned the weekend with what turned out to be the sixth-biggest opening in movie history.
