Weekend Box Office: "Eclipse" Leads the Pack
by KYW's Bill Wine
Talk about eclipsing the competition!
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse, the romantic vampire threequel that opened on Wednesday, finished first at the box office over the 4th of July weekend, earning an estimated $69 million, to push its cumulative total over the $160-million mark after just five days.
The weekend's other new mainstream attraction, M. Night Shyamalan's adventure fantasy The Last Airbender, debuted in second place, totaling $41 million.
Third place went to the box office leader of the last two weekends -- the record-setting animated hit Toy Story 3, which took in another $32 million.
Overall, it was a strong showing for the industry, with totals well ahead of those on the Independence Day weekend last year.
