Weekend Box Office: Despicable Me Was #1
by KYW's Bill Wine
It was an active weekend at movie theatres. Apparently, families found it far from despicable.
Despicable Me, that is, the animated comedy featuring the voice and accent of Steve Carell, which finished in first place and well ahead of the pack on its debut weekend, earning an estimated $60 million.
Last weekend's leader -- The Twilight Saga: Eclipse -- was the distant runner-up, taking in another $33 million.
The weekend's other new mainstream attraction, Predators, the action-thriller sequel starring Adrien Brody, placed third with $25 million.
Fourth went to the holdover animated hit, Toy Story 3, which added another $22 million to its impressive total.
Overall, with four attractions besting the $20-million mark, it was a stronger-than-projected summer weekend at the nation's multiplexes.
