Website Uses Foursquare To Crowdsource Cheesesteak Ratings
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - There's no shortage of online reviews of Philly cheesesteaks, but a new website ranks the top 25 shops in the city. It uses crowdsourcing and social networking.
"I kind of feel like the cheesesteak queen," says Blair from South Philly. Maybe not the queen, but she is the "mayor" of Pat's Steaks on Foursquare -- checking in 75 times there in the past year, more than anyone else.
She's had others, including Geno's, Tony Lukes and Ishkabibbles, but she always sides with Pat's in the end.
That's where PhillySteakout.com comes in. Chris Reif, the digital creative director at the ad agency Neiman Group, says the site ranks steak shops by how many people check in on Foursquare, the location-based social networking site. Yelp reviews right on the site help you separate the meat from the grizzle.
"You look at Pat's and Geno's and they top the list." But, "Pat's is a 82 percent and Geno's is at 85 percent tourists."
The site uses GPS data from their check-in to figure whether they've traveled from near or far to chow down -- maybe you'll want the cheesesteak the locals choose instead of the one that gets the most foot traffic.
