2 Tornadoes Touch Down In Region During Severe Storms, National Weather Service Confirms As They Survey Damage Across Region
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Two tornadoes touched down in our area overnight Thursday. An EF-1 tornado started in Souderton, Montgomery County and ended in the Silverdale-Perkasie area in Bucks County. Hamburg, Berks County was hit by a tornado as well.
The National Weather Service has confirmed two tornadoes touched down in the Philadelphia region during severe weather Wednesday night into Thursday morning. Wind sounded like a freight train barreling through Franconia Township.
The NWS is surveying storm damage from severe weather across the region Wednesday night into the early morning Thursday.
Chopper 3 was over the damage left behind on Thursday morning.
Video shows some significant damage to a roof, an umbrella toppled over a fence and some trees were completely uprooted.
One tree snapped and just missed a house. People who live in the home say they opened their front door and saw a massive tree. Off to the side, another tree can be seen crushing a car.
Eyewitness News spotted a survey team out accessing all of the damage as the cleanup continues.
"I was sleeping in bed with my puppy dog and all of a sudden there was this big bang," Souderton resident Harry Ostrander said.
That big bang was trees falling down left and right near Deerfield Drive. One of them hit Carol and Dominic Falcone's house.
"I sat on the bed and heard this woooof and I thought 'That doesn't sound good,' and my phone was beeping in the living room and that was the tornado warning. So then I came to the front door, I couldn't see out there was a big huge branch in front of it," Carol said.
"It was funny, you open the door and see a tree right there," Dominic Falcone said.
He said they are lucky the tree didn't go completely through the house and hit them.
"It's only like 6 feet from my head. It could have just knocked me right out," Dominic said.
A nearby shed was also tossed around and shingles were ripped off of roofs.
Torrie Bolton from Bolton's Farm in Silverdale says she took cover in the basement of her home after getting a tornado warning.
"We went downstairs and then it was real quiet and then all of a sudden we heard it. It was coming and we heard things breaking," Bolton said.
They came outside and the roof was ripped off, a nearby barn was damaged, and tree branches littered their lawn.
As the cleanup continues, the National Weather Service was out surveying the damage in Montgomery, Bucks and Berks Counties.
