The Fox Chase Branch of the Philadelphia Public Library is the media mecca of computer classes for all levels of expertise, and the best thing is, classes are free. For the beginner, computer basics are taught every Tuesday in February from 10 a.m. to noon. Intermediate classes are held on Wednesdays in February at 7 p.m. A special Microsoft Word workshop is set for Jan. 29 from 10:30 a.m. to noon, when participants can create individual resumes. In addition, a social media workshop, focusing on how to use Facebook and Twitter, is available Feb. 26 at 10:30 a.m. Space is limited for all classes, so reserve a spot early.

Keyspot offers a host of training programs, including basic skills, social networking and Microsoft Word. Philadelphia FIGHT's Critical Path Project is a low-income advocacy group offering free Internet access and a slew of digital literacy classes. While the group focuses on the disadvantaged, everyone is welcome to use its computer center. Workshops commonly run two to three hours and include basic topics such as buying a computer, how to connect to the Internet, and caring for your equipment. Higher level training classes meet for four or more days. Topics range from social media, blogging and using the computer in the workforce to Microsoft Word and digital storytelling.
