The Need for Literacy

by KYW's Dr. Marciene Mattleman

Years ago one could earn a living in manufacturing jobs. During World War II with fewer men on the home front, women began factory work in large numbers, memorialized in the poster, "Rosie the Riveter."

The Budd Company, founded in 1912, fabricated auto parts and built railroad cars until 1999, and along with many other plants, provided secure work for thousands of Philadelphians. However, by the time the smokestacks shut down, those needing employment required other skills for the growing service economy.

Some people graduated from high schools with inadequate skills in reading and math—victims of social promotion. Others with family responsibilities lack skills because they left high school early and still others are newcomers to our country and require training in language and numeracy to get jobs with a future.

This week an announcement by Mayor Nutter on International Literacy Day highlights the Mayor's Commission on Literacy in Philadelphia, part of the Free Library, and a focal point of his administration. The Commission will provide information and referral for those who require training to gain necessary skills for today's workforce.
