Temple Looks To Continue Roll Tonight Against GW
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Temple Owls are rolling.
As they prepare to host George Washington on Wednesday night at the Liacouras Center, the Owls sit at 6-2 on the season and they have won five straight. The latest victory was a hard-fought 70-62 Big 5 win over Penn on Saturday.
"We certainly have a long, long way to go and we have some really good games ahead of us here, including GW," Temple head coach Fran Dunphy tells KYW Newsradio. "I like the fact that we've found a way to win in a number of games but we still, defensively, need to get better and we can still not get out of character as we sometimes do on the offensive end. But I'm pleased with where we are."
Listen to the entire interview with Temple head coach Fran Dunphy:
A lot of different players are making this success possible for Temple. Junior forward Obi Enechionyia is leading the way, averaging 19.9 points and 7.9 rebounds a night. A couple of freshman guards have also been front and center for this success.
"Alani Moore and Quinton Rose have played a lot early, out of necessity to be honest with you," Dunphy says. "Without Trey Lowe and without Josh Brown, we were in need of their services immediately and you had to be patient with them and give them a little bit of leeway. I think they've taken advantage of that. I think they've lessened their turnovers. I think they've lessened their out of character plays on the offensive end. It's been a great help to us."
Rose is averaging 12.1 points a game while Moore pours in 8.5. Brown recently returned to the rotation after suffering an off-season Achilles injury. The senior guard has averaged 4.5 points in two games since coming back, playing a total of 25 minutes.
George Washington is 5-4 on the season. The Colonials last played on Sunday, losing at home to Florida State, 67-48.
"They have great size," Dunphy says. "They've got youth. One of their best players, a young man by the name of (Yuta) Watanbe has not played (in the last four games because of a calf injury), although I think there is a good chance he will play against us."
Dunphy says one statistic about the Colonials really jumps out at him.
"They have made 176 (free throws) and their opponents have only taken 137," Dunphy says. "That's a big indication of how well they get it to the rim, how much they force you to play defense."
Wednesday night's game will get underway at 7:30pm.
