'Super 8' Reels In First Place At The Box Office
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Totals weren't exactly super for Super 8, but they were more than good enough.
Super 8, the science-fiction thriller from director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg, managed an estimated and thoroughly respectable $37-million on its debut weekend, landing it in first place at the box office.
That dropped last weekend's leader, X-Men: First Class, into second place with a total of $25-million on its second weekend of release.
The third through fifth spots were also claimed by holdover sequels.
The Hangover Part II took in $18-million, Kung Fu Panda 2 earned $16-million, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides totaled $11-million.
Overall, it was yet another solid weekend at the summer box office, with totals slightly below those of a year ago.
