Study: Running In Minimal Shoes Reduces Injury Risk

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- You know those barefoot runners? Well, they may be onto something.

According to a study from the University of Exeter, published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sport & Exercise, less cushion encourages athletes to land on the ball of their foot rather than the heel. This puts less stress on the body and ultimately reduces your risk of injury, while running.

"This research shows that running in minimal shoes and landing on the balls of your feet reduces loading rates and may therefore reduce the risk of injury," researcher Dr. Hannah Rice told The Telegraph.

While running to stay healthy is increasing around the world, the best way to reduce injury and stay healthy might be to simply wear less protective footwear.
