Singer/Songwriter Laura Shay Discusses "Love & Other Things" In New Album
By Melony Roy
Twenty-nine-year-old singer/songwriter Laura Shay grew up in Northeast Philadelphia. Her third album "Love & Other Things" was released at the end of November 2011. It is a collection of nine songs about the different stages of love.
When asked if she still described her sound as "moody girl music," Shay responded "Yes, it's all just based on how I feel. I'm still a selfish songwriter and if people happen to like them, that's cool."
Known for a darker sound, there are two new things that can be heard in this album: more acoustic guitar and less piano. Laura Shay has also been in a relationship for the past year and a half which has made her music take a more positive turn.
Laura is a self-taught musician who plays both the piano and the guitar. She began her music career fresh out of high school playing open mic nights around the city. She released her first CD, "To A Place," in 2005 and her second studio album, "Bittersweet," in 2008. Shay was also among the top 10 in the Lilith Fair local talent search in May 2010.
Her songs have been used in TV and film such as BBC's "Skins," The Hallmark movie "Elevator Girl" and Food Network's "Chopped." Laura will be making her acting debut, playing a version of herself in an unreleased film "Trust Me."
Laura's next live show is December 10th. "The Deli Shows" will be at The New York Bagel Cafe & Deli in Glen Mills, PA. Doors open at 6:30pm.
