Police shoot man accused of shooting woman in Chester, Pennsylvania, officials say
A man suspected of shooting a woman multiple times was shot by police in Chester, Pennsylvania, the Delaware County District Attorney's Office said.
The City of Chester said Thursday that officers responded to a woman screaming for help near the Walnut Street Deli on 9th and Walnut streets around 8:30 p.m. on April 22.
At the scene, the DA's office said police found a woman lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. Officers also reported seeing the suspected shooter fire a gun at people in the area before he aimed the weapon at police, according to prosecutors.
The responding officers then fired their weapons and struck the man, officials said. Both the alleged shooter and the female victim were taken to a nearby hospital with serious injuries.
The relationship between the man and the woman is unclear.
"As with every shooting, officer involved or otherwise, we will work to make sure we have every angle that depicts the events that transpired," Delaware County DA Tanner Rous said. "Having reviewed the footage we've obtained thus far, though, I can tell you with confidence that the actions of the Chester Police Department were nothing short of lifesaving and the Defendant in this case had every intention to kill anyone he could. I'm grateful that they are all unharmed and everyone is hoping with everything they can that the female victim survives these catastrophic injuries."
Police said at least 25 shell casings were found at the scene.
"This is a deeply troubling incident, and our thoughts are with the involved parties and their families during this difficult time," Mayor Stefan Roots said in a statement. "I am grateful for the swift and decisive actions of our officers in responding to a dangerous and rapidly evolving situation. The safety of our residents remains our top priority, and we will continue to work closely with our law enforcement partners to ensure a thorough and transparent investigation."
The Chester Police Department and Delaware County District Attorney's Office are investigating.
Editor's note: Police previously said three people were shot, but then reported two people were struck by gunfire.
