PHILADLEPHIA (CBS) - Events are planned at six Philadelphia churches Tuesday, aimed at getting parents to buckle-up their children properly in the car.

Motor vehicle crashes are a leading cause of death among all children, but it's worse among some minorities.

Dr. Rebeccah Brown, director of the Buckle Up for Life program, says the reason is simple.

"Hispanic and African-American children are significantly less likely, about three times less likely, to be buckled up in seat belts or car seats."

The Buckle Up for Life program tries to correct that.

"We will be doing programs in three Hispanic churches and three African-American churches. Hopefully we will be making children in Philadelphia whole lot safer."

Dr. Brown says churches are used because they are trusted community centers.

She says non-use of child restraints can stem from poverty, overcrowded vehicles or cultural nonchalance about the dangers of the road.
