Lincoln's Stephen Scott With 50 Carries For 282 Yards

By Matt Leon

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- For the first time since their football program returned to action back in 2008, the Division II Lincoln University Lions are off to a 2-0 start.

A huge reason for the early success here in 2015 has been the outstanding play of junior running back Stephen Scott.

A native of Baltimore, Scott has rushed for 461 yards and five touchdowns in Lincoln's two games and he is enjoying this strong start for the Lions.

"It's really exciting," Scott tells KYW Newsradio. "It's great to see all the hard work of the coaches and also us, as players, it's great to see it all come together and work out. It's been really fun, really exciting, but we're nowhere near done yet. We're still hungry and we still have a lot to do."

Scott had a day for the ages this past Saturday against North Carolina Wesleyan. In a 28-17 Lincoln victory, Scott carried the ball an incredible 50 times for 282 yards, both totals setting program records, and he also scored two touchdowns.  He says he felt great after getting that heavy workload, and he credits his teammates for that.

"The offensive line and the receivers did a great job taking care of me, they really did," Scott says. "Blocking downfield for the receivers, blocking in between the tackles, getting up to the linebackers. It wasn't as bad as it sounds, the 50 carries wasn't that much when you've got great blocking."

Scott does admit though, that after the game he was surprised to find out the exact numbers on his stat line.

"Yes, definitely," Scott says. "I was just telling my coaches, I went to go talk to my grandparents, who came out to the game and after that I went over to get some water and I saw the stat sheet. I'm thinking in my mind I had about maybe 35 carries for maybe 150 (yards). When I saw that 50 carries for (282 yards), I had to look twice. I couldn't believe it. I went straight to one of my offensive linemen, who is one of my closest friends, Brandon Burrell, and hugged him. I couldn't believe it.

Scott and the Lions will look for a 3-0 start on Saturday when they play their home opener against Alderson Broaddus University at 1:00pm.
