Sciatica Complicates Back Pain

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - There are many causes of back pain. Most are from overuse and are related to sprains or strains and are not usually long lasting. But one cause of pain, sciatica, can be far more complicated.

Sciatica refers to a group of symptoms that occur when the sciatic nerve is compressed, injured, or inflamed. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body. It branches out from the spinal cord in the lower back and runs through both buttocks and legs. The nerve and its branches are responsible for movement and sensation in the legs and feet.

Sciatica frequently occurs due to a bulging or herniated disk in the lower spine. This can pinch or put pressure on the sciatic nerve. Symptoms of sciatica may include burning, numbness or tingling in the back, buttocks, leg or foot.
