Pruning Hydrangea
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - I'm always saying not to prune your hydrangeas very much - and I mean the old fashioned mophead kind that bloom on last year's branches. But these days, more and more people have planted newer breeds of hydrangeas that bloom all summer. These everblooming hydrangeas are known by different names, including the very popular 'Endless Summer.' But whatever yours is called, if you've planted a hydrangea that's said to rebloom, that means you can whack off the old heads whenever they are fading or ugly to you, and encourage the plant to flower again.
These new hydrangeas not only flower longer through the summer, they're also more reliable after a harsh winter or a late spring frost that can kill flower buds on the old fashioned varieties. But since these bloom on both old and new wood, with ever-blooming hydrangeas you can feel free to cut flowers to enjoy in a vase or prune the shrub for shape pretty much anytime you please.
