President Of Central High School In Philadelphia Retiring After 28 Years
By Mike DeNardo
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - He's overseen one of Philadelphia's best-regarded schools for nearly there decades. Now, he's retiring.
Dr. Sheldon Pavel says after 28 and a half years as president of Central High School, it's time to spend more time with his family. Pavel took the helm at Central High in January of 1984, right after a judge ordered the school to accept female students. He describes Central now as "as heterogeneous as any environment could possibly be..."
"I think that if I looked at everything overall, it's been my privilege to help make this place a microcosm of what I think the world should be."
Pavel says working with the alumni to fund and create a new library, and having Central nationally recognized as a Blue Ribbon school are among the accomplishments he'll remember, when he looks back at what he calls "an incredible ride."
