Positively Philadelphia: Ocean City Celebrates Silence
Summer's over but if you think the fun festivals at the Jersey shore are over, think again.
"We have a very hectic season where there's a lot of hoopla, a lot of noise and so on. Why not just celebrate quiet sometime in November before the holidays?"
Yes, you heard right. The Quiet Festival is this coming week in Ocean City. Public relations director Mark Soifer:
"The Quiet Festival suggests you fly a kite, inspect the clouds, blow bubbles into the air, stroll the boardwalk, enjoy the moon and stars, give your doggy a tummy rub, just appreciate quiet things."
So, if you make noise does the noise authority come around and give you a ticket?
"No, we just take them right to jail."
Not really.
"The Quiet Festival people wouldn't do that. We're subtle. We just go over to them and say, 'Hey look, this is the Quiet Festival. How about yawning along with us to Beautiful Dreamer?' So we suck them in that way."
So if we had a Quiet Festival here, what noises do you think should be the first to go?
"Traffic noise."
"Sirens."
"Car horns."
"Car horns, because people blow them out for no reason."
"How about my wife stops chattering during the Eagles game?"
"The traffic. It's just really loud and gets a little annoying."
I guess we really do have a little work to do in the quiet department, but we can each do our part. Here's mine:
(Lauren says this very quietly) That's Positively Philadelphia, I'm Lauren Lipton.
