Police Officer Assaulted In North Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police are looking for a man who assaulted an officer overnight in North Philadelphia.

It happened shortly after 12 a.m. Wednesday at the Park Waverly Apartments in the 100 block of East Godfrey Avenue in East Oak Lane.

Police say it began as a call for a domestic disturbance which quickly escalated to a call for a man with a gun. Responding officers saw the man on the porch of the apartment they were called to investigate and ordered him to show his hands. Authorities say the man refused and when an officer attempted to frisk him, the man punched the officer in the face. Police say the officer tried to grab the man and they both fell off the porch and on to the ground. That's when, police say, the man kicked the officer and then ran off into a wooded area near Cardinal Dougherty High School.

The officer was taken to Einstein Medical Center where he was treated for bruises. He was expected to fine.

Police are still searching for the suspect, but say they know exactly who they are looking for.
