Police Charge Suspect Shot During Pursuit In Kensington

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia police say a shooting involving officers in Kensington ended with a suspect and an innocent bystander wounded. It happened around 10:30 p.m. Friday when police say they spotted a man tucking a gun into his waistband in the 1800 block of Clementine Street.

Authorities say when officers approached the man, he took off on foot and a chase ensued.

The man shot by authorities was identified as Charles Gordon, 33, and on Monday night, he was charged with aggravated assault and related charges.

Police say Gordon encountered officers and ran through several streets, before officers saw him with a handgun on the 3000 block of Jasper Street.

Authorities say he turned toward the officers on the 3000 block of Helen Street. Officials say both officers believed that Gordon discharged his weapon in their directions and they fired their weapons.

Police say he continued to run and eventually raised his handgun at officers on the 2800 block of Amber Street. At that point, police say several officers discharged their weapons, striking Gordon multiple times.

He was taken to Temple University Hospital and listed in stable condition.

A 36-year-old woman was also struck during the ordeal and was treated at Hahnemann Hospital for her injuries. The incident is being investigated by Internal Affairs and the officers involved have been placed on administrative duty.
